The Rats
Die Ratten was produced by actress and singer Grete Ly. Her company, Grete Ly-Film, made five films between 1919 and 1921. Die Ratten, which is based on the play of the same name by Gerhart Hauptmann, was the last one. Hauptmann, one of the most important promoters of literary naturalism, had received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1912.
The screen adaptation of his play is beautifully photographed in a realistic style by Karl Freund, one of best German cameraman of that time who also worked with directors such as Lang, Murnau, Dreyer, Dupont and Ruttmann. Moreover, the cast of Die Ratten also acts in a very naturalistic way, far from the affected expressionistic style. Die Ratten was made on a modest budget, but the collaboration of an excellent team produced a film that was ahead of its time.

"The Confessor", attributed to the pioneering Baños brothers, is a curious and not very well known pornographic silent film that constitutes a true exception in the treatment of religion in Spanish silent cinema. In this way, the pornographic attraction of "The Confessor" is built through the perversion of the priestly vow of celibacy and the sacrament of penance. This film can be considered as another chapter in the cultural tradition of criticizing the vices of the clergy, and as a consequence of the environment and the new leisure culture that took place in the Europe of the so-called "frivolous twenties".

Engineer Walter Fahr has constructed a massive passenger submarine, the 'Gloria'. It is the astronomer Sotuma who figures out what has happened: during their undersea journey, the Earth was scorched by the tail of a comet, and all life extinguished. A ravaging epidemic is fast approaching the world city of Atlantica. In his laboratory, the famous doctor Harold Lister works like a maniac on a serum to counteract the deadly plague. His colleague and competitor Whistler labels Lister’s efforts as pure fantasies and even plants seeds of doubt in the mind of Lister’s fiancée, Julia, the daughter of a millionaire. When the plague comes to town carried by a poor woman, Annie Rawlins, Whistler’s claims are put to shame: the serum works. But while Lister works tirelessly to stop the infection in the city, the jealous Whistler breaks into the laboratory and substitutes the serum for a fake.
