Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.

I really wanted to like this movie. I feel terribly cynical trashing it, and that's why I'm giving it a middling 5. Actually, I'm giving it a 5 because there were some superb performances.

This movie feels like it was made purely to piss off people who want good shows

It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.

A father says goodbye to his little daughter. From that day, the daughter longs for her father. Their farewell scene is so memorable and touching that the feeling of loss continues throughout the entire story, despite the fact that the father and daughter actually spend only a few seconds together in the film. This film is stunning coupled with its background music, which sounds ethnic to my foreigner ears, and the way characters are depicted. The European music brings a rhythm to the story as well as delivers emotions of the heroine. You cannot tell how she feels from her facial reaction - characters are pictured too simple and small to recognize their faces. Yet you can tell how old they are or how they feel from their gestures and the way they move. The film is quite short. In addition, the characters do not say any words. However, I was impressed at the end of watching of the story. There are much room left for watchers to think, or maybe dream, about the meanings of every event in the story, so the impressions that you will hold may well be different from mine, but what I felt was nostalgia. Not quite sad, not quite happy, but in between of these two.

A little girl goes to the seaside with her father, who then departs alone in a rowboat. He doesn't return, so the girl keeps coming back to the same place to wait for him. We see instances from her life as she grows older, makes friends, build a family etc. all centred on the absence of the father. This beautifully-made animated short has a simple but expressive art style, and uses a very restrained and subdued colour palette composed mainly of white and shades of brown. No words are ever spoken, and the piano-based music feels like it's from one or two centuries ago. This produces an effect that is primarily one of melancholy. The repetitive nature of the story conveys the senses of loss and absence powerfully, and the way the passage of time is woven into the story -indicated by such things as transformations in the landscape (such as the change of seasons), in the protagonist's appearance and in the circumstances surrounding her- reinforces the melancholic mood. This is not a film to watch for a surprise-filled story as the story that is there is very compact and there are no surprises. Instead, it's one to watch for to appreciate the visual aesthetics and to "savour" the mood.

Father and Daughter As the title suggests, this 2000 Academy Award-winning short film revolves around a father and his daughter, the latter of which is left alone one day when her father doesn't return from sea. There's some brilliant visuals on display here, from the Lowry-esque character designs to the striking use of black and white, but it's in character and story where the film falls short. It's often hard to distinguish our main character from others in the long shots both because of her lack of distinctive design as well as lack of characterisation, meaning that the precious few minutes we spend with her are somewhat marred by confusion. In addition, I found some of the theming regarding the power of the father figure questionable, and the lack of character arc for the daughter was rather disengaging. Even so, this is a visually fantastic piece of cinema that shows the potential beauty of the animated medium.

Father and Daughter is a touching short movie that tells the story of a girl who was abandoned by her father on an early age and kept waiting for him during her life. The narrative consists of a series of scenes of this girl in different periods of her life, returning to the same place in which her father had abandoned her - a slope near a river. The animation itself is eye- catching. The characters are always riding bicycles, and most of time they are only shadows sliding through a pastel colored background. Therefore, when a color is applied - when the girl is wearing a blue dress, for instance - it is highlighted contrasting the background. Moreover, the whole narrative is built without a single line of dialogue. Thus, visual storytelling and music have capital importance for the narrative flow. The narrative itself is beautifully portrayed: the sequence of scenes shows not only the girl growing up and passing through life stages, but also people who were important for her, as the number of shadows sliding through the scenery changes. The ending as well was heart-touching. In my opinion, it was a simple plot portrayed beautifully, with a striking art and satisfying soundtrack. All the elements were well placed and it succeeded in conveying sentiments. That said, Father and Daughter is certainly a film worth watching.
